AONA Surgeon Profile

Professor Paul Manson, M.D.
Paul Manson

One of the best and most tenured friends the AO has in the maxillofacial surgical specialty is Professor Paul Manson.

Dr. Manson is truly a North American pioneer in the AO philosophy of craniofacial surgery, being one of the first surgeons to use the new Synthes titanium implants for maxillofacial surgery in this country. He has participated as an AO faculty member and course chairman since the mid 1980's, and was the driving force behind the creation of the North American Maxillofacial Education Committee in 1988. After establishing this committee, Dr. Manson served as its chairman for the first few years of its existence, and worked tirelessly with the other committee members to bring vast improvement to the quality of AO maxillofacial courses in North America. Besides his educational activities, Professor Manson also participated in the development of new and unique implants for maxillofacial surgery, and in the early clinical use of these devices. Because of Dr. Manson and other pioneers in this field, the quality of patient care and the outcomes of surgical treatment for facial fractures and reconstructive surgery have improved immeasurably.

In recognition for his tremendous contributions, Paul Manson was elected as a Trustee to the AO ASIF Foundation and currently serves as a member of the Foundation's Academic Council, the body that decides the scientific direction of the AO Foundation.

Dr. Manson is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore. He is also a Professor at the University of Maryland in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Manson is Board certified in both General Surgery and Plastic Surgery, and specializes in craniofacial reconstructive and trauma surgery. He has a strong practice in head and neck tumors and head and neck cancer surgery, especially cutaneous mid face and frontal reconstruction. He truly has performed miracles in reconstructing the craniofacial skeleton and external appearance of patients who at one time would have been without hope of a near normal facial appearance.

Paul and his wife Kathryn live in Baltimore but can often be found in locations all over the world, as they love to travel together. Both have wonderful personalities and marvelous senses of humor. They also have two children, a son Theodore who is a biomechanical engineer now attending medical school, and a daughter, Jenner, who manages a boutique in Washington, D.C.

While Kathryn states that Paul's hobby is "medicine", he is also an excellent chef (both inside and on the grill outdoors) and enjoys rebuilding Lionel trains. Anyone who has the privilege of meeting Paul recognizes immediately that he is a very special person and those of us who can call him a friend are fortunate indeed. We at AO North America are proud of our association with this unique and talented surgeon, and look forward to many more years of collaboration and camaraderie with him.
