The Martin Allgöwer Trauma Fellowship

Eligibility

Practicing North American orthopaedic or general surgeon specializing in trauma surgery who has had extensive experience with AO techniques.

Application Procedures

Completed applications with supporting documents must be received by November 15 of each year. Announcement of the recipient of the Fellowship will be made by January 31 of the following year.

An application will consist of a completed application form, two letters of reference (one from the applicant's Chief of Service), a curriculum vitae, and a statement from the applicant which outlines the reasons why he wishes to participate in the Fellowship, and with whom and where he would like to take the Fellowship. Applications are to be submitted in complete form, Attn: Chairman of the Martin Allgöwer Fellowship Committee, c/o AO North America (address above).

Prerequisites for Application to the Fellowship

1. Graduation from an orthopaedic or general residency program.
2. Previous participation in a Basic (Current Concepts) AO ASIF Course and an Advanced or Specialty AO Course.
3. Practical experience with AO techniques.
4. Specialty in trauma.

What is included in the Fellowship Award

The Fellowship will be granted for a minimum of three months and a maximum of six months, at a European AO trauma center. The award consists of round trip travel expenses for the Fellow to the site of the Fellowship, living quarters for the Fellow (and his spouse, if she accompanies him), and a monthly stipend of $2,000 US dollars to cover meals and incidentals.

Also included in the Fellowship is an invitation as a faculty member to the annual AO ASIF Davos Course the year following the completion of the Fellowship, with travel and lodging paid by the course organization. During the course, the Fellow may be asked to present a report on his Fellowship experience.

The Fellowship Selection Committee

The Selection Committee is chaired by a current or former Chairman of the AO North America Musculoskeltal Education Committee and will be comprised of at least five active members of AO North America. Candidates who are active AO North American members will be given preference when the recipient of this award is chosen.
